During her distinguished 25 years of service, she commanded the Tri-Service School of Dental Hygienist Training for the last nine years, playing a pivotal role in shaping the future of military dental hygiene.
Elaine has been an active member of the BSDHT throughout her career, serving in multiple capacities, including Regional Officer, Military Representative to the Council, and Elected Members’ Representative to the Council. She also represented the Council on the Executive Committee of the BDHA (now BSDHT) and contributed to the development of the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidelines as a co-opted member of their guideline development group.
Elaine has been a long-standing member of the BSDHT Publications Committee, where she regularly contributes clinical articles and reviews on topics of professional interest. Her dedication to education extends to teaching and presenting on a variety of subjects at regional, national, and international conferences.
After 21 successful years as the Education and Project Manager for TePe Oral Hygiene Products Ltd, Elaine left an indelible mark on the industry. At TePe, she designed and implemented innovative educational programs for the dental profession and seamlessly combined her commercial role with her passion for public health. Notably, it was here she met Dr Varkha Rattu, who played an instrumental role in providing the platform that allowed Dr Rattu to grow the ‘Periodontitis and Diabetes’ campaign (even if Elaine denies it).
Elaine continues to serve as an expert member of NICE for smoking cessation, reflecting her enduring commitment to public health. An experienced, albeit self-described, reluctant author, she has contributed chapters to clinical teaching texts on behavioural change, the patient’s role in-home care, and the effects of smoking and vaping on oral health.
In addition to her many accomplishments, Elaine has also served on the National Oral Health Promotion Group Committee, further showcasing her dedication to advancing oral health awareness and education.
